After rescuing the cats from the snow, we drove out to Sunset Crater.
Mary found a friend outside the ranger station: Due to the clouds, we didn't really get to see the crater: Mary on the trail: Mom on the trail: By the end of our first hike, there were hints of blue in the sky:

Very cool! I didn't know that there had ever been volcanic eruptions in Arizona. Especially, in recent geological history.
We found a little snowman friend when we were at the Grand Canyon (holy crap, has it been that long?) 9 years ago! I guess it must be an Arizona thing?

They actually think it erupted as recently as between 1080 and 1150 AD. There's evidence the locals noticed the early signs and moved out for a bit.
